Nelson Mandela University (NMU), formerly known as Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, was officially established on 1 January 2005 through the merger of the PE Technikon, University of Port Elizabeth (UPE), and Vista University’s Port Elizabeth campus.

On 20 July 2017, the institution was renamed Nelson Mandela University, making it the only university in the world named after Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. This change marked a new chapter of transformation, global positioning, and academic excellence.

PLEASE NOTE: The Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is not considered a postgraduate qualification, but rather a professional teaching qualification aimed at graduates interested in teaching as a career, after completion of their initial undergraduate qualifications (e.g., AdvDip or Degree). Therefore, the PGCE qualification is listed under the ‘Undergraduate’ tab on the online application system and not under the Postgraduate tab.

Your online application form must be accompanied by:
1. a certified copy of your final Grade 11 exam results or;
2. a certified copy of your most recent Grade 12 (June/Sept) exam results (no March results), or
3. a certified copy of your matriculation certificate/statement of results if you have already passed Grade 12/completed schooling,
4. certified copies of your diploma/degree certificates plus academic record(s) and certificate(s) of conduct if you have studied elsewhere,
5. a certified copy of your ID (birth certificate if still waiting for ID),
6. a certified copy of the identity document of your parent/legal guardian/surety,
7. declaration by your parent / legal guardian / surety if you are a dependant, or currently at school, or studying at a tertiary institution, or have recently left school and do/will not have permanent employment when applying or studying at the University.

If your Applicant Score (AS) and subject specific % pass marks do not meet the direct entry requirements for your chosen programme, you will need to consider another qualification as we no longer test applicants for admission.

The outcome of your application will be conveyed to you via our website and sms. Please ensure that we have your correct cell phone number.
If you are admitted, you will receive an orientation guide together with registration information in November/December.
Final acceptance is depended on:
1. your final school leaving results meeting the minimum admission requirements for your chosen programme, or
2. the submission of your final academic record and certificate of conduct if you are studying elsewhere.

Step 2: Apply online
All applications must be submitted through the university’s online application system.

Documents required for application:

A certified copy of your final Grade 11 results, or
A certified copy of your most recent Grade 12 (June/September) results (March results are not accepted), or
A certified copy of your matric certificate or statement of results (if you have already completed Grade 12)
Certified copies of all diploma/degree certificates, academic records, and certificates of conduct if previously registered at another institution
A certified copy of your ID document (or birth certificate if ID is not yet issued)
A certified copy of your parent/legal guardian/surety’s ID
A signed declaration by your parent/legal guardian/surety if you are a dependant, currently at school, or unemployed at the time of application
